What the headline rating measures, why it is always higher than your tyres, and the spec that decides how long you stand there.

The PSI number on a compressor is not the number you need

Every portable compressor leads with a pressure figure. 150 PSI, 160 PSI, sometimes 180. Car tyres run at 30 to 35. The gap looks like marketing, and partly it is, but the number does mean something once you know what it is measuring.

What the rating is

Maximum pressure is the point at which the pump stalls: the highest figure it can reach against a closed valve, usually for a few seconds, usually with a cold motor. It is a ceiling, not a working figure. A compressor rated to 150 PSI is comfortable working at a third of that all day, which is exactly where car tyres sit.

So the rating is not useless. It tells you how much headroom the motor has, and headroom is what stops a pump overheating on the fourth tyre. What it does not tell you is the thing you will actually notice.

The number that decides how long you stand there

Flow rate, usually printed as litres per minute or CFM, is what fills the tyre. Two compressors both rated to 150 PSI can differ by a factor of three in how fast they get a 205/55 R16 from 20 to 33 PSI. One takes two minutes, the other takes six.

Only one row in that table needs a high ceiling, and it is the bicycle. If you bought a compressor for road bike tyres, the 150 PSI rating is doing real work. For everything else it is headroom.

Duty cycle, the spec nobody prints

Compressors heat up. Duty cycle is the share of time one can run before it needs to cool, and small 12V units are typically rated for ten to fifteen minutes of continuous work. Four tyres from flat will exceed that. Four tyres topped up by three PSI each will not.

If a pump gets hot enough to smell, stop. The failure mode is a cooked winding, and it is permanent.

Auto stop is worth more than any pressure figure

Set the target, walk away, come back to a tyre at the right pressure. Without it you are crouched at the wheel watching a gauge, and the temptation is to over-inflate by a couple of PSI to save a second trip. Over-inflated tyres wear down the middle of the tread and grip worse in the wet.
